Inside Delta's newest and largest airport lounge in the world (2024)

Delta Air Lines has opened its hotly anticipated business and first class lounge at JFK, as part of its $1.5 billion investment at the New York airport.

DailyMail.com gained access to the Delta One Loungein Terminal 4 before its official opening to the public, and the size of it is set to impress even the most seasoned of lounge goers.

The space, which measures almost the same as three Olympic-sized swimming pools at 39,707sqft, has been broken down into different areas, with the offerings including a sprawling food court, an atmospheric fine dining restaurant, a swanky bar area, a lounge complete with a fireplace and a year-round covered terrace looking out over the runway.

To help travelers unwind before their flight, there is also a mini spa, with five state-of-the-art massage chairs from Human Touch (which retail for more than $10,000), a treatment room and sleeping booths with reclining chairs.

To book a treatment, there are touch screen kiosks around the lounge where visitors can select a time slot using their email or phone number.

Leading off from the 'wellness room,' there is a 'serenity lounge' with soft lighting and spaced out seating to further aid relaxation and then from there, another impressive feature of the lounge are the shower suites.

To prevent queues from forming, there are eight shower rooms which have a hotel-like feel, with attractive marble and herringbone tile detailing, a backlit mirror and products from luxury body care brand, Grown Alchemist.

A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines told DailyMail.com that the majority of customers who fly Delta One were business travelers.

For this reason, the shower suites have closets next to them, where travelers can leave shirts they would like to be steamed and pressed by a member of the valet team.

There is also a shoe shine service on offer.

The lounge is only open to travelers flying in Delta One, which is the airline'sequivalent of a business and first class.

This class is only available on long-haul international flights and in select long-haul domestic markets.

For this reason, Delta Air Lines 'does not anticipate the lounge ever reaching full capacity.'

In total, there are 515 seats in the premium facility and for travelers to take calls in private, there are eight soundproof booths.

The restaurant serves up 140 covers and it has a polished feel, with eye-catching light fixtures and the option of countertop or table seating.

While the food court in the Delta One Lounge serves up fresh pastries, salads, cheese plates, desserts and a small selection of hot dishes, the restaurant offers an elevated a la carte menu.

There are three courses for lounge goers to indulge in and one member of staff told DailyMail.com that the standout dishes were the steamed Prince Edward Island mussels in a green curry sauce to start, while the wagyu steak with fries was a 'must-try' from the mains.

Completing the swanky feel, Delta has partnered with the high-end fashion house Missoni on the interiors with accent pillows, snazzy vases and coffee table books among the designer touches

For dessert, the current offerings are a dark chocolate soufflé, an upside down orange olive oil cake, a New York cheesecake and a brownie accompanied by a chocolate mousse and dollop of marshmallow fluff.

On the drinks side of things, the lounge beverage menu has been curated by a sommelier and mixologist, with the tipples ranging from a champagne to an espresso martini.

For health conscious travelers, there is also a unique offering in the form of a 'wall of waters.'

Next to the spa, there are several gold taps on the wall, with each offering a different drink, including beetroot juice, an orange and ginger juice blend and a strawberry infused water.

Missoni has also partnered with the airline to offer branded amenity kits.

Touching on Delta's mission when it came to the lounge's design Claude Roussel, who is the vice president of Sky Club and lounge experience, said: 'We want each of our guests to receive a highly personalized and dedicated level of service.

'It's not enough to have beautiful spaces and exceptional offerings. Premium lounge customers should feel welcomed and known when they walk in the door, just as they would at their favorite hotel or restaurant.

'We look forward to providing that warm welcome and making "premium" feel personal for each guest.'

Along with the exclusive Delta One Lounge at JFK, there is aDelta Sky Club lounge which is open to travelers who either have a Delta Sky Club membership or a premium cabin ticket with Delta or a partner airline.

American Express Platinum cardholders previously could use the lounges but in January, Delta Air Lines announced that it would be tightening its restrictions on lounge access in a bid to reduce overcrowding.

Now those who book basic economy tickets are no longer allowed entry into the lounge, regardless of holding an American Express Platinum card or any other premium credit card.

Delta Air Lines, which is headquartered in Atlanta, currently offers the most flights and seats of any carrier at JFK with more than 200 total peak-day departures to more than 90 domestic and international destinations.
