Summer thoughts No summer lull - a busy and decisive week for economic policy and interest rates: - FOMC minutes out tonight from the last meeting (giving some more insight into pace and size of interest rate moves / cuts) - lots of USA eco data this week (jobless claims, PMi etc) Tino and Friday - all key for path dependent policy - Jackson Hole Symposium with Powell speech this Friday The market is still betting on major cuts this year (100 basis points to 4.5%) and next Sep 2035: 250 basis points to 3.0% (median) according to Fed Fund futures. The next FOMC is on Sep 18, followed by Nov 7 and Dec 18. With the USA elections in November there is little time and room for the Fed to act during these potentially politically and market wise volatile weeks. There would have to be a real reason to cut in all three meetings to get to the market implied levels. I have been of the opinion that - one should listen to what Jerome Powell says (he has been clear in the last two years with the way up, initially behind the curve, then spit on) - what the macro data tell us (strong economy despite higher rates- strong earnings - AI and tech continue to be key factors. Conclusion: one should listen to the Fed, ignore market noise and wishful thinking of big cuts this and next year. I prefer the term impact rather than ESG. We’ve heard of activism, greenwashing and DEI programs. Ultimately what counts is the result, not only the headline or the effort. Can we always measure the impact? If we can’t then it’s probably not ESG…
