Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is one of the most popular manga and anime series ever. The (mis)adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Crew are popular around the world, with millions of fans waiting for new chapters of the manga and new episodes of the anime. One Piece is one of the “Big Three” anime series, alongside Bleach and Naruto, and in this article, we have decided to talk about the amazing characters of this series.
What we are about to tell you is a list of the most important One Piece characters and their voice actors, both in the original (Japanese) and the dubbed (English) version of the anime series. Before we approach each of the characters individually, here is a quick overview:
Monkey D. Luffy – Mayumi Tanaka

Luffy, also known as “Straw Hat”, is the captain of the Straw Hat gang and officially an Emperor of the Seas. His big dream is to find the One Piece, a legendary treasure, and thus become the pirate king. He ate the Gum-Gum fruit as a child and therefore has a stretchy rubber body. His greatest role model is Shanks, from whom he received his straw hat as a token of appreciation.
Roronoa Zoro – Kazuya Nakai

Zoro, also known as “Pirate Hunter”, is a former bounty hunter and the first to swear allegiance to Luffy. He aims to become the best swordsman in the world, driven by an oath to his late rival Kuina, whom he never defeated in battle. To achieve this goal, he trains very hard in order to be able to defeat the current best swordsman, the samurai of the seas Mihawk “Hawkeye” Dracule.
Nami – Akemi Okamura

Nami is the crew’s navigator and cartographer, but initially describes herself as a thief specializing in pirates. The background to this is her agreement with the fish-man Arlong, from whom she wanted to buy back her home village. At first, Nami sees the journey with the straw hats only as a partnership of convenience. But when Luffy defeats Arlong, she finally joins the Straw Hat gang.
Usopp – Kappei Yamaguchi

Usopp is actually the crew’s marksman and weapons specialist and, before Franky joined the gang, the ship’s carpenter. Usopp is often a coward and a liar, but you can still rely on him in sticky situations. He hails from the village of Syrop in Eastblue, where he grew up partly alone after his father went off to be a pirate and his mother died of an illness.
Vinsmoke Sanji – Hiroaki Hirata

Sanji Vinsmoke is the cook on Luffy’s ship. He has a weakness for beautiful women and will flirt with any pretty girl, often acting very childishly. Sanji only fights with his feet to spare his hands, which are needed for cooking. He learned his skills from chef and pirate “Redfoot” Jeff, under whom Sanji was chef on the floating sea restaurant Baratié.
Tony Tony Chopper – Ikue Ōtani

Chopper is a male reindeer who ate the Human-Human Fruit, becoming a human reindeer. He’s the ship’s doctor for the Straw Hats. His current bounty is 100 berries as he was only considered a pet by the Navy. He hails from the island of Drumm, now Sakura, making him the only member of the Straw Hats who was born on the Grand Line.
Nefeltari Vivi – Misa Watanabe

Vivi is the princess of the desert kingdom of Alabasta. She is a very compassionate and sensitive person, but learned political understanding from her father at an early age: Even as a child, she was able to keep a cool head in tense situations, as was shown at the Conference of Kings when she was beaten by King Wapol became. She uses a weapon called the Kujacky Slasher.
Nico Robin – Yuriko Yamaguchi

Nico Robin is an archaeologist and the fourth oldest member of the crew. Already a bookworm as a young girl, she eventually ate the Flora Flora fruit, which gave her the ability to grow parts of her body in all sorts of places around her. When her homeland, the island of Ohara in the West Blue, was wiped out by the Navy through the Buster Call, she managed to escape, which from then on shaped her youth.
Cutty “Franky” Flam – Kazuki Yao

Frankie, actually Cutty Flam, is a cyborg and the ship’s carpenter for the Straw Hat Gang after they rescued him and Robin from Enie’s lobby in Justice Island. He likes to act like the cool guy, but he also starts to cry or sing a blues with his guitar when he hears sad stories. One of his characteristics is his performances, where he likes to strike poses that he thinks are cool, but which are rather embarrassing for the others.
Brook – Chō

Brook, also called “Soul King”, is a living skeleton and was a member of the Rumba pirate gang, whose giant whale La Boum Luffy’s gang encountered at the Cape of Twins. The fact that he is a living skeleton is thanks to the dead realm fruit, which allowed his soul to return to his body after his physical death. However, his soul wandered around for too long, so his body decomposed in the meantime.
Jinbei – Daisuke Gōri/ Katsuhisa Hōki

Jinbei is a fishman, was a member of the Sun Pirate Gang and then became captain of the Fishman Pirate Gang. He accepted the World Government’s offer to become one of the Seven Samurai of the Seas in order to increase protection for Fishman Island. However, he later refused to the World Government to take part in the battle against Whitebeard (Great Battle of Marineford).
Monkey D. Garp – Hiroshi Naka

Monkey D. Garp is a Navy Vice Admiral, Luffy’s grandfather, Dragon’s father and was the one who officially captured the Pirate King Gol D. Roger. He is called Hero of the Navy because he defeated the Rocks pirate gang on God Valley 38 years before the Wano Country incident. He also owes his fame in part to Gol D. Roger, since he and Garp had to join forces for this battle, which the Navy and the World Government are keeping secret.
Sengoku – Takkō Ishimori / Tōru Ōkawa

Sengoku, also known as Buddha, was Grand Admiral and thus Commander-in-Chief of the Navy until the Battle of Marineford. Like many other officers, he strove for “absolute justice”. During the Battle of Marineford, Sengoku personally oversaw the scaffold on which Ace was to be executed. From there he also revealed to the marines and the world population that Ace is the son of the pirate king Gol D. Roger.
Kuzan / Aokiji – Takehito Koyasu

Kuzan was a Navy admiral, his nickname “Aokiji” means “Blue Pheasant”. Calm in nature and possessing the Frozen Fruit, he is able to control ice. He represents the Navy on the motto of sloppy justice. Grand Admiral Sengoku wanted him as his successor, but there was support for Sakazuki (Akainu) from within the ranks of the World Government.
Sakazuki / Akainu – Fumihiko Tachiki

Sakazuki is a Navy Grand Admiral who possesses the devil power of the Magma Fruit, allowing him to transform into and control magma. He was first an admiral in the Navy. His nickname “Akainu” means “Red Dog” and indicates that he is very aggressive and uncompromising against pirates and other opponents of the world government. So he pursued the two brothers Ace and Luffy, killed Ace a little later and injured Luffy critically.
Portgas D. Ace – Toshio Furukawa

Portgas D. Ace is Luffy’s foster brother three years his senior and a former commander of Whitebeard’s pirate gang. He owes his nickname to his devil power, which he gained through the Fire Fruit. With this Logia power, Ace himself has become fire. Ace has a muscular physique and is also capable of fighting without his Devil Fruit. Like Luffy and Garp, Ace tends to fall asleep during meals and conversations.
Buggy – Shigeru Chiba

Buggy the Clown, also known as Clown Star, is the captain of the Buggy gang. He has eaten of the Chop-Chop Fruit, which allows him to separate his body into any shape up to the thickness of a fillet. This also protects him from cutting and thrusting weapons. As long as his feet touch the ground, the rest of his body can float. He can even turn into a car with the help of a motor.
Mihawk Dracule – Takeshi Aono / Hirohiko Kakegawa

“Hawk-Eye” Mihawk is considered the best swordsman in the world. He was the first of the seven samurai encountered by the Straw Hats in the East Blue, where he was pursuing another pirate whose entire fleet he had sunk. When he is challenged by Zoro, he easily defeats him with just a dagger. Such is his strength that he is even able to effortlessly slice through ships with just a single swing of his sword.
Don Quixote Doflamingo – Hideyuki Tanaka

Don Quixote Doflamingo is a former world aristocrat and the captain of his gang. He has eaten from the thread fruit, with which he can create threads. With these threads he can control people, cut everything like a knife or link them to the clouds to swing through the air. In keeping with his surname Doflamingo, he dresses in a cloak of pink feathers. He refers to his crew members as “family”.
Gecko Moria – Katsuhisa Hōki

Gecko Moria is the captain of the Thriller Bark, the largest ship in the world. Having eaten from the shadow fruit, he is able to steal the shadows of others and put them in dead bodies, causing them to rise as undead. Moria is very lazy. Just like Luffy, he has the ambition to become the pirate king, but due to his laziness his commanders Perona, Absalom and Hogback should do it for him.
Trafalgar D. Water Law – Hiroshi Kamiya

Law is the captain of the Heart Pirate Gang and possesses the Op-Op Devil Fruit power. He is nicknamed “Surgeon of Death”. This fruit allows him to create a “room” in which he can cut off body parts and move them to any place he likes without hurting or killing them. In a created room, he is also able to defy gravity, swap personalities of people or teleport himself.
Boa Hancock – Kotono Mitsuishi

Boa Hancock is the ruler of Amazon Lily, the captain of the Kuja Pirates and is considered the second most beautiful woman in the world after the mermaid princess. Also known as the “Pirate Empress” and “Snake Princess,” she has the power to turn anyone who falls for her beauty into stone. Hancock has two other sisters, Marigold and Sandersonia.
Shanks – Shūichi Ikeda

Shanks is the captain of his own pirate gang, the Redhead Pirates, and the role model of Monkey D. Luffy. He also gave him the straw hat. Shanks was once a ship’s boy in Gol D. Rogers’ gang along with Buggy the clown, where he spent his early years as a pirate. After his captain’s execution, he began forming his own gang, which includes Usopp’s father, Yasopp. Shanks is a friendly and very quiet person who is not averse to alcohol and wild parties.
Marshall D. Teach / “Blackbeard” – Akio Ōtsuka

Marshall D. Teach, aka Blackbeard, is an admiral of the Blackbeard gang, a former member of the 2nd Division of the Whitebeard Pirates and, like Luffy, has the goal of becoming the Pirate King. In terms of his actions and especially his values, Blackbeard is often the exact opposite of Luffy.
Edward Newgate / “Whitebeard” – Kinryū Arimoto / Ryūzaburō Ōtomo

Edward Newgate, aka Whitebeard, was one of the Four Emperors and was considered the world’s strongest pirate until his death, although due to his heavy drinking and age, he constantly required the care of several nurses and used to be one of Gol D. Roger’s fiercest opponents. He got his name from his crescent-shaped white mustache. Before traveling with his own gang, he was a member of the Rocks gang.
Charlotte Linlin / “Big Mom” – Toshiko Fujita / Mami Koyama

Charlotte Linlin, also known as Big Mom, is one of the Four Emperors, captain of their pirate gang, and a former member of the Rocks gang. Possessing the Soul fruit, she is able to transfer souls from people into objects (e.g. plants, candy) which are thus brought to life and subjected to her will. These objects are called homies. It can also alter a person’s lifespan at will.
Kaidō – Tesshō Genda

Kaidō is the captain of the Beasts pirate gang, a former member of the Rocks gang, and one of the Four Emperors. Regarded as the strongest being in the world, he has eaten from a devil fruit that allows him to transform into either a dragon or a dracomen. Kaido suffers from mood swings, which are significantly influenced by alcohol.
Arlong – Jūrōta Kosugi

Arlong is a former commander of the Sun Pirates gang and the former captain of the Arlong gang. He is a fishman, which is why he has a shark-like nose. He is racist: the fish people are the pinnacle of evolution and he sees other people as weak and despicable, but that didn’t stop him from recognizing and appreciating Nami’s nautical abilities.
Sir Crocodile / Mr. 0 – Ryūzaburō Ōtomo

Sir Crocodile, formerly known as Mr. 0, is a pirate and the former boss of the Baroque Works broken up by the Straw Hat Gang. He ate the Sand fruit, a logia-type fruit that allows him to turn himself into sand, trigger sandstorms, or cause quicksand. In addition, it is able to extract and dry out the water from all organic materials and living beings.
Charlotte Cracker – Takuya Kirimoto

Charlotte Cracker is the tenth son of Big Mom and the Minister of Biscuits. Quite a violent, impulsive and ruthless man, he has a small and handsome physique, although he presents himself more often with his enormous and square aspect than him, conferred on him by the power of his devil fruit. Cracker has in fact ingested the Bisco-Bisco fruit, which allows him to generate cookies in unlimited quantities and use them at will.
Eneru – Toshiyuki Morikawa

Eneru is a former god on Skypeia. He possesses the power of the Thunder Fruit, which allows him to generate lightning and turn into electricity. He also possesses the Observation Haki, which enables him to anticipate attacks or read people’s minds. He hails from the sky island of Birka, which so far is only known to produce strong fighters and was destroyed by Eneru upon his departure.
Charlotte Katakuri – Tomokazu Sugita

Charlotte Katakuri is Big Mom’s second eldest son and third child. His observation haki is so highly developed that he is able to see a few moments into the future. On Whole Cake Island, he and Luffy engaged in a bitter battle in which he was ultimately defeated.
Rob Lucci – Tomokazu Seki

Rob Lucci is the strongest member of the former CP9, a member of the CP0 and belongs to the bodyguard of the world aristocrats. He ate from the model Leopard’s cat fruit, which is why he can transform into a leopard-man. Like all CP9 agents, he has mastered Formula 6 and, thanks to his devil power, can enhance any formula. Lucci is cold-blooded, ruthless and murderous.
Monkey D. Dragon – Hidekatsu Shibata

Monkey D. Dragon is Luffy’s father and Garp’s son. As the leader of the revolutionaries, he is considered the most wanted enemy of the world government and has thus become the target of attacks and assassinations by the world government. The left side of his face is decorated with a tattoo. Dragon seems to be able to control the weather. His goal is to overthrow the world government.
Gol D. Roger – Chikao Ōtsuka / Masane Tsukayama

He was the first Pirate King. After hiding the One Piece, he was executed in his native town of Loguetown 22 years before the plot began. His death heralded the great age of pirates. Officially, Roger was caught by the Navy, but the truth is that Roger turned himself in because he had a terminal illness and should have died anyway.
Silvers Rayleigh – Keiichi Sonobe

Silvers Rayleigh, also known as the Dark King, was Gol D. Roger’s vice-captain during his lifetime and currently serves as a sheathing specialist on the Sabaody Archipelago. The straw hat gang seeks him out there to have their ship encased. He’s a carefree man who even sells himself into slavery to pay off debts. He can always free himself because of his abilities. Rayleigh met Roger on his former houseboat.
